THEY HAD ONLY BEEN PERFORMING TOGETHER FOR SIX MONTHS. THEN THEY WALKED ONTO THE AGT STAGE. Madelyn Tallent and Malachi Martin did not arrive on America’s Got Talent with a huge production, professional dancers, or years of experience as a duo. They came from the small town of Benton, Tennessee, carrying a guitar, a banjo, and a sound that felt honest from the very first note.
Away from the spotlight, their lives looked very different. Madelyn worked as a waitress at her family’s restaurant, while Malachi had a full-time job and a young family waiting for him at home. Music was something they loved, but the idea of performing together before millions of viewers still felt like an enormous leap.
For their Season 21 audition, Madelyn and Malachi transformed OneRepublic’s “Counting Stars” into a warm country and bluegrass performance. Madelyn’s distinctive voice and guitar blended beautifully with Malachi’s banjo, giving the familiar pop song an entirely new personality.
The audience responded immediately, but the judges were divided. Howie Mandel believed the pair were not quite ready and voted no. Mel B, Sofia Vergara, and Simon Cowell saw something worth developing and gave them three yeses, sending the Tennessee duo forward in the competition. Their next challenge came during Mel B’s Judges’ Callback Round, where former Spice Girl Emma Bunton joined Mel to help select the acts. Madelyn and Malachi performed a country-inspired version of “Shut Up and Dance.” They were encouraged to consider another song, but they chose to trust their original decision and perform the arrangement they had prepared.
Ultimately, they were eliminated before the Live Shows. Mel B felt that they needed more time to grow together. But not every inspiring AGT story needs to end with a Golden Buzzer, a trophy, or falling confetti.
Sometimes the victory is found in two ordinary working people stepping beyond the lives they know and discovering what may be possible. Only months after beginning their musical partnership, Madelyn Tallent and Malachi Martin had performed on one of television’s biggest stages and introduced their sound to an audience far beyond Tennessee.
